So, you've landed an interview – congratulations.  Now, let's make sure you're fully prepared.

Whether it's your first interview or you're looking to brush up on your skills, this guide covers what you need to know about interview techniques, common questions, various interview types, and how perform well.

Interview Techniques:

Be Confident and Calm

Confidence is key. Take a deep breath, maintain eye contact, and speak clearly. Remember, the interviewer is interested in getting to know you.

Active Listening

Pay close attention to the questions. If you don't understand something, don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Answering Questions

Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers for behavioral questions. Provide specific examples from your past experiences.

Body Language

Be mindful of your body language. Sit up straight, offer a firm handshake, and smile. Positive body language exudes confidence and professionalism.

Types of Interviews & Tests

Behavioural Interviews Focus on how you handled specific situations in the past
Panel Interviews You'll be interviewed by multiple people at once
Phone and Video Interviews Conducted remotely; ensure you have a quiet, well-lit space and a stable internet connection

You may be asked to take a test on the day of the interview. It might be an aptitude test, or a practical test relevant to the type of work.

Some interviews may require you to give a presentation on a topic relevant to the job you are applying for. Usually, you would be told about this in advance.

You may have to take part in group activities with other candidates. These types of interviews assess your ability to work in a team, your communication skills, your initiative, or ability to lead others. Ensure you listen to others in your group, but you will want to share and contribute ideas too.

How to Prepare:

Research the Company

Understand their values, mission, and recent news. Show that you've done your homework.

Practice Mock Interviews

Enlist a friend or family member to conduct mock interviews. This helps you practice answering questions out loud.

Prepare Your Questions

Have some questions ready for the interviewer. It shows your genuine interest in the position.  Questions you might ask will depend on the job, but our suggestions are:

  • How many people would I be working with or in the team?
  • Who would I be report to or be managed by?
  • Can you tell me about a typical day on this job?

Special Requirements

In preparation for your interview, the employer may offer the opportunity to disclose any specific requirements you may have.

This is so they can make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs. You do not have to disclose disability or health information unless you choose to.
