Planning for the Future as a Future Climate Leader: Astrid's Skills Bootcamp Story

Published on 06 March 2026

“It’s an excellent source of knowledge exchange… it gives you the tools and skills to address challenges going forward.”

Astrid Fischer works as a Contract Administrator at Total Energy Solutions Ltd, an energy consultancy. She took part in the Skills Bootcamp: Future Climate Leaders at the University of Plymouth to build her knowledge and confidence in sustainability.

Astrid wanted to deepen her understanding of sustainability and learn practical ways to support her organisation’s future environmental plans. The course offered a structured way to develop strategic thinking, leadership skills and real-world solutions to climate challenges.

The Skills Bootcamp combined flexible online learning with interactive sessions, including breakout discussions, practical exercises, and guest speakers from a range of sectors.

Astrid found the format particularly beneficial:

  • Flexible delivery allowed her to fit learning around work
  • Opportunities to collaborate with others built valuable connections
  • Resources and tools were provided to support ongoing development

She describes it as an “excellent source of knowledge exchange” that combines theory with practical application.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course for Astrid was learning new strategic tools and communication techniques.

She particularly enjoyed using the SAVI (Scope, Analyse, Vision, Implement) canvas, which helped her:

  • Break down problems more effectively
  • Consider multiple perspectives
  • Plan both short- and long-term solutions

The course also improved her communication skills, helping her better understand different viewpoints and engage people more effectively.

Astrid has already started applying her learning in the workplace, helping to shape her organisation’s current and future sustainability plans.

The course has given her:

  • Greater confidence in tackling environmental challenges
  • Practical tools to support decision-making
  • A more strategic approach to problem-solving

What advice did Astrid have for those considering signing up for a Skills Bootcamp?
