Carlie always dreamed of working with children - but like many adults thinking about retraining, she felt held back. Leaving school without the GCSEs she’d hoped for knocked her confidence, and the cost of adult training made that dream feel out of reach. So, she spent most of her working life in retail, unsure how to take the next step.

That all changed when she discovered the fully funded Skills Bootcamps, delivered in Cornwall through YTKO and supported by Cornwall Council.

Looking for a fresh start, Carlie signed up for the Skills Bootcamp in First Aid - a flexible, free, and easy-to-access course that instantly felt like the right fit. From day one, she knew she’d made a positive move toward her future.

The Skills Bootcamp gave her far more than a learning experience. She gained:

· New practical skills tailored to the workplace

· A huge confidence boost in her abilities

· Insights into what employers really want

· CV support to help her stand out

And of course - that all-important First Aid certificate, which immediately made her more employable in childcare settings.

Carlie admits she initially found written coursework challenging. But thanks to the encouragement of lecturers and interactive online discussions on topics such as health and safety, she soon found her stride.

Speaking about her experience, Carlie told us: “I learned so much through the Skills Bootcamp. I don’t think I would have ever had the confidence on my own to apply for my current job. Take a chance - it’s always worth learning new skills and building confidence.”

As a busy working mum, flexibility mattered. The eight-week course fitted perfectly around her schedule, allowing her to study at a pace that suited her. She learned about safeguarding, early years development, first aid, and the role of an Early Years Educator - all essential knowledge for her future career path.

Today, Carlie has taken a huge step forward: she’s now studying for a Level 3 Apprenticeship and is already using the skills she gained on the Bootcamp in her current role. Her dream of working with children is no longer a distant ambition - it’s happening.
