Making a career change later in life: Adult Education & Lifelong Learning

Published on 28 May 2026

Changing career later in life is becoming increasingly common thanks to adult education and lifelong learning.

Many adults are choosing to retrain, return to learning or move into completely different industries after years in the same sector. For some, it’s about finding better opportunities. For others, it’s about pursuing work that feels more meaningful or flexible. It could be a better work-life balance, higher pay or just time for something new.

Taking a different career path can be achievable at any age. Across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, there is a wide range of opportunities available for adults. Local training providers offer flexible courses and qualifications designed to fit around work, family life and existing commitments.

Whether you want to progress, discover a new interest or start fresh in a different sector, there is support available to help you take that next step.

Why more adults are changing careers

In today’s working world, many people will change jobs and industries several times throughout their lives. Learning new skills can help people stay adaptable, improve their job prospects and feel more confident about their future.

The good news is that adult education is designed to fit around real life. Many courses are flexible, part-time or short-term, making it easier to learn while balancing work, family or other commitments.

For people who may not have studied for years, the thought of starting a course can feel daunting at first. On the other hand, you may already have degree level qualifications but have just moved to Cornwall and are looking for a refresh or a change of direction.

Overall, adult learners bring valuable experience, motivation and transferable skills that can make a real difference when starting something new. The end result is a brighter outlook for the future and an open door to new possibilities.

Skills Bootcamps

There are a variety of ways adults can retrain or gain qualifications throughout Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Skills Bootcamps are one option; these flexible training programmes focus on practical, employer-focused skills and are designed to help people move into industries with strong job demand.

Courses are available in areas such as digital, construction, hospitality, health and social care, green skills and more. Some programmes can be completed in a matter of weeks, helping learners quickly gain the skills that employers are looking for.

Additionally, completing a Skills Bootcamp can be recognised as prior learning to help prepare for an apprenticeship. This means if you went on to do an apprenticeship, you could even complete it in less time to qualify quicker.

Leanne took a Skills Bootcamp in Welding at Truro and Penwith College after working in various jobs over the years. After struggling in traditional education and leaving school with Ds and Es as her highest grades, she spent years working in driving-related roles while gaining additional transport qualifications.

Wanting to expand on her skills and explore new opportunities, that was when Leanne enrolled in the practical, hands-on welding course. Despite finding welding challenging at first, she gained confidence and a strong sense of achievement, supported by her patient tutor.

The flexibility of the Skills Bootcamp allowed Leanne to balance learning with work and family life. She now hopes to pursue part-time welding alongside her current job and values the opportunity to gain new skills through a fully-funded course.

Leanne’s story is just one of many highlighting how practical training programmes can help people overcome educational challenges, build confidence and open the door to new career paths later in life.

Apprenticeships

One common misconception is that apprenticeships are only for school leavers. In reality, apprenticeships are available to adults of all ages and can be an excellent way to retrain while earning. For many, this combination of practical experience and training can make the transition feel more manageable.

Overall, they are a great way to start or progress in a career, gain new skills and experience, get qualified up to degree and masters level and get paid whilst training.

Free courses for adults

For eligible adults, free qualifications are also available across a variety of sectors. These courses can help people develop professionally or prepare for a completely different type of work. Free courses may be available for adults aged 19 and over who are unemployed, earn below a certain salary threshold or do not already hold a certain level of qualification.

Some learners may also be able to receive support with childcare and travel costs, helping make learning more accessible. There is a wide range of free courses available in areas including:

  • Accounting
  • Digital and IT
  • Health and social care
  • Construction
  • Early years
  • Hospitality
  • Agriculture
  • And many more

Building essential skills

Maths, English and Digital skills continue to play an important role in career progression and further education. For adults who did not achieve these qualifications at school, or who are looking to improve these skills after moving to the area, there are free courses available to help improve these essential skills and boost confidence.

Developing these can open the doors to further training and help people feel more equipped to take the next step in their career journey.
