Looking Beyond Age: Why Experienced Workers Could Be Your Next Great Hire
When employers talk about the skills they value most, they often mention reliability, commitment, problem-solving and real-world experience.
Yet many talented jobseekers over 50 continue to face barriers when looking for work.
One Cornwall resident currently being supported through the People Hub, as part of the Connect to Work programme, recently shared a poem about his experiences of job searching. It captures the frustration that many mature jobseekers can feel when applications go unanswered and opportunities seem out of reach.

As people work later in life and careers become less linear, employers have an opportunity to tap into a rich pool of talent. Mature workers often bring years of industry knowledge, transferable skills, strong work ethic and a willingness to learn new things.
For many employers facing recruitment challenges, widening he talent pool can make good business sense. Looking beyond assumptions about age helps organisations access skilled candidates who are motivated to contribute and succeed.
Consider Connect to Work
Delivered through the People Hub and funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Connect to Work is a new supported employment programme for Cornwall and the isles of Scilly. Through Connect to Work, participants receive personalised support to help them overcome barriers to employment and prepare for suitable roles. The programme also works closely with employers to understand their recruitment needs and connect them with local people who have the skills and potential to thrive.
The poem ends with a simple hope:
"Hopefully someone will give me a ring."
For employers, that phone call could be the start of finding a dedicated, capable employee whose experience and resilience make a real difference to their organisation.
